Texas Democrats Block Passage of Voter Suppression Bill by Leaving Capitol Ahead of Vote

Democratic lawmakers in Texas staged a dramatic walkout to forestall the Republican-controlled Legislature from passing a sweeping invoice to rewrite election legal guidelines within the state.

Critics say the invoice will result in mass voter suppression, particularly of Black and Latinx voters, by eliminating drive-thru and 24-hour voting, in addition to poll drop containers.

The Republican invoice would additionally make it simpler for elections to be overturned even when there is no such thing as a proof of fraud.

Trey Martinez Fischer, a Democrat representing House District 116 within the state Legislature, says the laws would have “a tremendous impact” on poll entry within the state. “Just like every bad policy, Hispanics, Latinos and Asian Americans will be disproportionately impacted,” Fischer says. “The time is now for a national response.”
