While Chhalaang is Rajkummar Rao’s sixth collaboration with Hansal Mehta, it’s the first time the 2 have labored on a romantic comedy. For Nushrat Bharucha, she is happy to play ‘a small-town woman for the primary time.’
Rajkummar Rao has emerged as one of many best within the younger technology of actors, having impressed audiences with movies equivalent to Shahid, Trapped, Newton, Bareilly Ki Barfi, and Stree to call a couple of. The appearing powerhouse is thought for his alternative of unconventional roles, typically these of peculiar individuals grappling with extraordinary circumstances.
One such movie that he’s wanting ahead to is Chhalaang, a social comedy, which the actor describes as candy, aspirational, actual, and humorous, with a message. “It not simply talks concerning the significance of sports activities in our lives but in addition how in life you need to take that chhalaang, the leap of religion, and it might be that somebody will come and encourage you want what occurs with my character within the movie,” says Rao, who’s paired with Nushrat Bharucha.
“To play a Haryanvi PT (Physical Training) teacher who is so laid back, and suddenly, things shift in his life, there is a transformation that he goes through. The arc of the character is very interesting. I have never played a character like this before, and we haven’t seen stories about the PT teachers. They play a very important role in our lives while growing up. But we don’t really know their lives and that attracted me to the film. I also wanted to do a sports film. The film is set in Haryana, which is a familiar world for me,” says the National Award winner.
Written by Luv Ranjan and directed by Rao’s frequent collaborator Hansal Mehta, the movie will launch on the eve of Children’s Day.
Ajay Devgn manufacturing Chhalaang is Rao and Mehta’s sixth collaboration (together with the ALTBalaji net sequence Bose:Dead/Alive), with all their earlier movies — Shahid, Citylights, Aligarh, and Omerta being critical tragic tales or biopics. What is attention-grabbing is that for the primary time they’ve come collectively in a comedy. “It was positively simpler than different movies as a result of this time, I didn’t should be in that darkish area with heavy ideas. It’s not a biopic and a practical story once more. Chhalaang is a enjoyable movie, and we had nice enjoyable on set, which finally received translated to the viewers. But in contrast to the favored perception, Hansal sir is a humorous man. He understands humour and no matter movies we do, we like having enjoyable on units. We don’t go right into a shell or develop into critical or don’t speak to one another. That doesn’t occur. But no person anticipated us to discover this style, and it’s enjoyable to shock individuals,” says Rao.
However, for Bharucha, who performs a pc science trainer, and who reunites together with her Love Sex Aur Dhokha co-star after a decade, was in a brand new area. “I was a nervous wreck on set. I haven’t played a small-town girl before. I have always been seen as a city girl. And then I had to speak in Haryanvi. All these were stressful points for me. I had a language coach, and I would also be on Raj’s head to show me how to do it. As it is I put a lot of pressure on myself so it was difficult. I wanted to be super prepared with the lines, get the accent right. I tortured myself a lot, and then the opening scene was a long dialogue with many senior actors around me, which was intimidating,” says Bharucha.
“But,” she continues, “Hansal sir made me believe in myself. I thought he would be a serious taskmaster, I would probably not get the character right and he would wonder who he has cast. I was like falling into pieces on set. But he was very supportive. He trusts his actors, something that I admire about him. Even though he has a clear idea of what he wants to do with the film, he wants to know where you see the scene going. He gives a lot of freedom to his actors, and that gives actors more confidence to be that character. It was a trial-and-error process for me, and it was very rewarding working with Hansal sir.”
Rao’s filmography boasts of movies set in small cities, with a lot of these being important and business successes like Newton, Stree, and Bareilly Ki Barfi. While the actor believes that there are a variety of tales that come from the heartland, he additionally tries his finest to make his characters look completely different in every one among them. “It might be by means of the physique language, accent, the circumstances, the backstory, the setting, the interior conflicts of the character in each movie are completely different, and therefore the interior course of is completely different. Chhalaang is ready in Haryana, which is a well-known world for me. I’ve seen academics like Manto once I was rising up. And in case you are true to the character you then don’t should suppose an excessive amount of. Once you perceive the character in your head then your system simply lets you be in that kind. I don’t plan chemically that I’m going to do it like this,” says Rao,
The actor is just about having fun with the present section of his profession however he says that he’s all the time in pursuit of searching for one thing new. “I enjoy playing all kinds of characters. I don’t want to put myself in a box that I want to do only serious or only lighthearted films. I would really love to do an intense love story, and maybe in a different way. Of course, these films are always there for a reason, the films that people relate to, they want to get entertained, have fun, smile, and laugh, but my heart is there for each and every kind of film,” he says.
Rao has two movies releasing consecutively on digital platforms – Chhalaang and Ludo (12 November on Netflix India). While he finds the big-screen expertise magical, contemplating the consumption of video streaming platforms persevering with to spike, he understands the significance of the digital medium as nicely. “People are consuming a variety of content material on OTT platforms, and that’s the new norm. They need to watch content material as per their very own comfort. Nobody spoke about Paatal Lok until it dropped, after which individuals went loopy about it. People have been desperately ready for the second season of Mirzapur, after which we had Scam 1992. If your movie or sequence is sweet then individuals will welcome it with each palms. But sure, the large display screen stays magical, and I’m a big-screen fan myself. The expertise of watching a movie in the dead of night theatre with a whole lot of different individuals laughing out loud collectively, getting scared… that have won’t ever go away, it should all the time be there however OTT, too, will now be a robust parallel business, so you may’t deny the facility of OTT platforms,” says Rao.
For each Rao and Bharucha, the lockdown section was “productive,” and the unlock section “is a bit unnerving.” “I have learnt all the household chores in the last six-seven months. I washed utensils, was sweeping and mopping the floor, learned cooking, and discovered love for vacuum cleaners. Now, the unlock phase is a little unnerving because we don’t know whether we are safe or not. I have to start shooting this month, and fear is very much there,” says Bharucha.
“It does not feel like unlock yet because the pandemic is still there. I am in Chandigarh now, and about to start my new film (Dinesh Vijan’s next as-yet-untitled film) with all the safety precautions. But it doesn’t feel the same. I am very careful because things are still not normal. Lockdown was pretty much productive, I did a lot of things I couldn’t do in the last few years because of my hectic schedule. I did online masterclasses on acting, screenplay writing. But eventually, I started feeling a bit impatient, and wanted to be on set, which is now happening,” indicators off Rao.
Chhalaang is streaming on Amazon Prime Video India.
