A police station in Assam’s Nagaon district was set afire by a mob on Saturday following an alleged case of custodial loss of life of a neighborhood resident, a high police official mentioned. Three of these concerned within the arson have been arrested and operations are on to nab the others, the official mentioned.
The mob had set ablaze the Batadrava Police Station and a number of other two-wheelers within the afternoon following the loss of life of a fish dealer who was allegedly detained by the police late on Friday night when he was going to take a bus for Sivsagar. It was not clear why he was detained.
Nagaon Superintendent of Police Leena Doley mentioned, “Some miscreants had attacked the Batadrava Police Station within the afternoon and set it ablaze.” The members of the family of the fish dealer of Salonabori village claimed that the police had demanded Rs 10,00zero and a duck as a bribe for his launch, and his spouse visited the police station with a duck within the morning. When she returned with the cash later, she learnt that her husband had been taken to Nagaon Civil Hospital. After reaching there, she discovered him useless, they claimed.
Alleging that the person died due to torture, villagers gheraoed the police station, allegedly assaulted on-duty police personnel after which torched the police station. Videos of the incident confirmed a lady sprinkling some inflammable liquid on two-wheelers parked in entrance of the police station and setting them on hearth. The blaze engulfed the police station quickly after and hearth tenders later introduced the flames beneath management.
The SP, who visited the spot after the incident, mentioned the police are analysing all video footage accessible. On the allegations that the police demanded a bribe to launch the person, Doley mentioned all the costs might be investigated and if anybody is discovered responsible, steps might be taken.
