Indian Railways Adopts Form-Based Codes For Station Redevelopment Project

As a part of Indian Railways’ venture of redeveloping stations throughout the nationwide transporter’s community within the nation, the nodal company has formulated a first-of-its-kind ‘form-based codes’ for the business growth of railway land. The Indian Railways Station Development Corporation or IRSDC, liable for executing the station redevelopment venture, has adopted the form-based codes method, as per the guidebook issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. According to a press release shared by the organisation, the transfer is aimed toward revamping railway land or railway station areas into Railopolis, based mostly on the rules of transit-oriented growth (TOD). Once redeveloped, the stations will provide world-class, state-of-the-art facilities to passengers. A Railopolis is a mini good metropolis with mixed-use growth the place folks can reside, work, and play. These areas entice enormous funding and varied enterprise alternatives.

In order to expedite the station redevelopment venture, enhance ease-of-doing-business, and streamline the method, the organisation has developed handbooks and codes. The form-based codes method is just a set of a complete set of codes, norms, and pointers ready by the nodal organisation to plan station redevelopment and regulating business growth of railway land.

The organisation acknowledged that the testing of the draft codes is being performed on the ongoing station redevelopment tasks at Nagpur, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Gwalior, Bijwasan, Anand Vihar, and many others. According to Indian Railways Station Development Corporation, the codes or handbook/guidebook are compiled in six elements, that are as follows:

  • Handbook for station planning
  • Guidebook for operationalizing nationwide transit-oriented growth coverage for railway and station redevelopment
  • Form-based codes for business growth of railway land
  • Codes for architectural design of economic property
  • Green constructing codes for business growth on railway land
  • Codes for railway heritage asset
