The younger woman killed herself 4 days after the assault, which happened on May 14, East Flanders Public Prosecutor’s workplace informed CNN.
CNN affiliate information outlet RTL Info reported the woman was raped in Westerbegraafplaats cemetery in Ghent, after arranging to fulfill with a pal. She was then joined by 4 others who took photos as they raped her and shared them on social media, the reported added.
Police had been in a position to establish the suspects from these photographs, based on the report.
“Three minors were placed in a closed institution by the juvenile judge in Ghent and two adults (both 18 years old) were arrested by the investigating judge in Ghent for offenses that would have occurred shortly before the death of the victim. The council chamber in Ghent decided today that the detention of the two adults will be extended by one month,” the workplace of the East Flanders Public Prosecutor stated in an announcement Wednesday to CNN.
The two grownup suspects had been charged with “rape, indecent assault and the taking and sharing of pictures likely to constitute an attack on the integrity of a person” and don’t have any prior convictions, RTL Info reported.
Belgian Justice Minister Vincent van Quickenborne on Tuesday expressed his response on Twitter, writing, “Horrible. No phrases for it. My ideas are with the household and mates. Suspects have been arrested and the investigation is ongoing. Justice should and shall be reached.
“I name on victims of sexual violence: file a grievance. There are individuals prepared that can assist you in sexual care centres. Justice will do all the pieces to apprehend and punish perpetrators. Also those that unfold photographs, as a result of that can also be punishable. Absolute precedence for justice.”
