AgustaWestland chopper case: SC dismisses interim bail plea of Christian Michel

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a plea of Christian Michel James, an alleged intermediary arrested in reference to the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper rip-off instances, in search of interim bail on the grounds of threat of contracting coronavirus in Tihar jail.

The High Court on April 7 had dismissed his bail plea saying that the apprehension of Michel that due to his susceptible age and overcrowding in jail, he’s prone to contact COVID-19 which can be detrimental to his well being, is unfounded.

It had stated, ”As regards the apprehension of the petitioner (Michel) being contaminated by COVID-19 pandemic, it might be famous that the petitioner is lodged in a separate cell with solely two different prisoners and thus, will not be in a barrack or dormitory the place there are a variety of prisons. It will not be the case of the petitioner that any of the 2 inmates residing with him are affected by COVID-19.

“Hence, the apprehension of the petitioner also because of the vulnerable age and overcrowding in jail that he is likely to contact COVID-19 which may be detrimental to his health, is unfounded.”

In his plea, the 59-year-old Michel has claimed that his well being situation was crucial and incompatible with the present jail standing, particularly to manage up with the danger of contracting the COVID-19 an infection which may have a deadly impact on him as he’s already affected by severe pathologies. Michel, extradited from Dubai, was arrested by the ED on December 22, 2018.
