Four insurgents have been shot useless in central Manipur’s Thoubal district by safety forces on Sunday, officers mentioned. Sources mentioned the Army’s Special Forces have been concerned within the operation.
Officials mentioned that based mostly on intelligence inputs on presence of insurgents, a joint operation of the safety forces was launched on Saturday in Thoubal district. The space was cordoned off earlier than the gun battle began.
Protests have been happening in several components of Manipur in opposition to the assassination of an influential tribal chief and activist Athuan Abonmai by insurgents on September 22.
Mr Abonmai, the previous president of Zeliangrong Baudi, a tribal-based native council in Tamenglong district and a pacesetter of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), was kidnapped on September 22 when Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, accompanied by his ministerial colleagues, was visiting the hill district bordering Assam and Nagaland to inaugurate some tasks as part of the state’s “Go to Hills” marketing campaign.
On the request of the Manipur authorities, the Home Ministry earlier this month requested the National Investigation Agency to probe the assassination of the tribal chief.
The Manipur authorities had suspended 16 policemen together with some troopers of Manipur Rifles for negligence of responsibility and failing to guard the tribal chief.
