2020 Padma Awards: Posthumous honour for SP Balasubrahmanyam; Bombay Jayashri, KS Chithra amongst artists recognised – Art-and-culture News , Firstpost

Leading luminaries from the sphere of arts and tradition have been honoured with Padma awards on 25 January 2021, within the run-up to India’s Republic Day celebrations.

The Padma awards have been introduced on Monday night by the Ministry Of Home Affairs and included a complete of 119 honours, to have fun distinguished contributions to sports activities, medication, artwork and leisure, literature and training, social work and public affairs, amongst others. Honours have been conferred in all three classes — the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

Among the distinguished awardees have been SP Balasubrahmanyam, who has been posthumously conferred the Padma Vibhushan. Balasubrahmanyam, amongst India’s most celebrated singers, handed away in September 2020 after being hospitalised as a result of COVID-19 issues.

Seven Padma Vibhushan awards in all have been introduced, with artist Sudharshan Sahoo and archaeologist BB Lal additionally among the many honourees.

Ten personalities have been granted Padma Bhushans, with famend singer KS Chithra representing the artwork and tradition area.

Lastly, 102 awards have been introduced within the Padma Shri class. Lakha Khan, the grasp of the Sindhi sarangi, is among the many artists to be granted the honour, as is the famous musician Bombay Jayashri Ramnath, and Ghulam Rasool Khan. Chandamama artist and standard illustrator KC Sivasankar, who handed away in September, has additionally been honoured with a posthumous Padma Shri.

The Padma Awards are among the many highest civilian awards in India. The Government of India’s Press Information Bureau famous that “29 of the awardees [this year] are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI, 16 posthumous awardees and 1 transgender awardee”. The awards are conferred by the President of India at a ceremony held on the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Over 16,000 nominations have been acquired by the Government of India for the 2020 Padma Awards.
